Every parent has the obligation to support his or her children. In principle, the vast majority of parents agree with that statement and have no reservations about paying child support. In practice, there are many stress points in the determination of child support that are brought out by other aspects of the relationship between parents.
I am attorney Leonard A. Weitzman. After practicing family law in New Jersey for nearly 30 years, I recognize that every family situation is unique. Whether you are divorced or were never married, I can help you through the initial determination of child support, and assist you later with any necessary changes to child support or enforcement issues.
For seasoned legal counsel that protects your interests and those of your children, send me an email or call (908) 458-9098. I am happy to provide an initial consultation at my Bridgewater law office. Areas served include Hillsborough, Bedminster, Basking Ridge and Warren.
Seasoned Counsel, Smart Representation
The central issue at stake in child support is promoting the best interests of the children. New Jersey law assumes that all children are entitled to benefit from the income of both parents and that both parents must provide for them.
The amount of child support is determined, for the most part, by the New Jersey child support guidelines. These payment guidelines consider a number of factors, including:
- The number of children the mother and father share
- The income of both parents
- If either parent was previously married or has other children, the amount of any alimony or child support paid to a prior spouse or for other children
- The cost of health insurance paid by either parent
- The cost of day care paid by the custodial parent
If there is a good reason to deviate from the payment amount recommended by the guidelines, I can help you request that from the court. My experience gives me a great deal of insight into what requests are likely to be granted, and I will always give you realistic advice. As your lawyer, I will only encourage you to spend your resources on issues that are worth the time, money and effort.
Changing Child Support Orders
If you are paying child support and can no longer afford the payments, I can help you seek a modification from the court. Similarly, if you are the parent receiving support, and your payer receives a substantial raise, then it may be possible to have the payment amounts increased. Please feel free to get in touch with me to discuss either possibility.
