Somerset County Attorney
The initial divorce consultation is a critical part of the overall process. It presents an opportunity for you to not only gather information, but also assess the attorney you are meeting. In other words, do you think you will be able to trust the lawyer and work with him or her in a productive and professional way?
Evaluating a Lawyer and a Law Firm
Consider how you feel the first time you visit the lawyer's office. Ask yourself some basic yet important questions, such as:
- Does he or she appear knowledgeable and confident?
- Does he or she communicate well?
- How long has that attorney been practicing?
- Is the law firm focused on family law?
- Has that attorney been recognized by his or her peers for professional achievement?
- Are you comfortable in the office? Does the staff treat you well?
Remember that you are choosing someone to represent you in negotiations with other attorneys and in court before a judge. You should be asking yourself whether this is a person whom you want by your side protecting your interests as you go through thedivorce process.
What Happens in Initial Consultations at The Law Offices of Leonard A. Weitzman?
People frequently come to me with inaccurate information after receiving "advice" from friends or having read something on the Internet that simply may not be the law in New Jersey. My goal is to make sure you leave my Bridgewater office fully and accurately informed after our first meeting.
During that meeting, I welcome you to ask me questions about my professional experience, recognition and awards so that you can get to know about me. For example, I am rated AV Preeminent* by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating available. I will listen to your concerns and what brought you to my office. I will generally ask you a series of questions, designed to elicit the information I need to provide you with thorough and accurate information. I will provide you with a complete overview of your family law situation.
I will explain to you the process of equitable distribution in New Jersey, as well as the interplay of alimony and child support when applicable. I will explain to you the differences in legal custody and residential custody and various parenting time issues when children are involved. I will explain the legal process to you, from the initial filing of divorce to the final judgment. I will attempt to estimate all fees and costs.
Most initial consultations last approximately one hour. It is our office policy to charge a fee of $200.00 for this in-depth meeting. Should you elect to retain my services after that consultation, we will waive that fee and/or apply it to your initial retainer. Please call for more details and to schedule your initial consultation.
